I am in love with warm jackets, thick sweaters and cute dresses. Well, not that last one, that my Daddy loves π
But really, jackets and sweaters are not just for fun when you are a very small shorthaired Chihuahua, they are in winter actually a necessity. Small dogs are very close to the ground of course and so their belly will get cold fast when the ground is frozen or when it is cold. Also the Chihuahua is not a dog breed that was originally build for cold winters, we come from Mexico!Β
So when we are going outside in the cold, we need some wrapping up in the form of a coat or a sweater and thankfully there is so much choice there. When it is freezing or snowing, do not forget about our tuny vulnerable feet too, it can be dangerous. Snow and ice builds up between our nails and make them cold, so we need something to protect them. Not only that, but did you know that when it freezes outside and humans use roadsalt, we eat that? After a walk dogs lick their paws to clean it and this way the roadsalt ends up in their digestion which can turn out to be extremely dangerous and makes them really sick.
In summer we do not need any protection unless you are a hairless doggie, then you need something for protection from the burning sun. Please do not start with some sunblock, we are doggies and not humans, it will also be digested through our skin. Just put us some light airy dress on.Β Β
